5 Kid-Friendly Free Summer Activities

Kids playing

You don’t have to spend a ton of money to have fun this summer! Try these free (or almost free) kid-friendly activities and save some green.

Hold an Outdoor Olympics

Head to a park or even your own backyard and play games using stuff you already have. Here are some ideas:

-        Have the kids make paper airplanes and see who can throw theirs the furthest. Here’s a great website with the best paper airplane designs - www.foldnfly.com/

-        Set up a relay race where you can only hop, skip or jump.

-        Get creative with the playground or jungle gym. Ever tried to break the record for hanging on monkey bars?

The best part? Your kids will be so tired when they get home, they’ll go right to sleep. Score!

Hit Up Your Local Library

We know what you’re thinking… the library? Boring!  But hear us out - today’s library might not be what you remember. All the books are really just a bonus, because most libraries have free programs and activities. Puppet shows. Sing-alongs. Story time. They’re all free and air conditioned. Find a library near you: https://find-your-public-library.dp.la/

Family Picnic

Plan a Picnic

Kids get a huge kick out of breaking their routine, so change up lunch time. Grab some beach towels, pack a few sandwiches and hit the backyard. Chat about the animals you see in the clouds and look for four-leaf clovers. It’s tasty and creative!

Make Your Own Video

Kids have amazing tech skills. Let them show off what they know with a video. Ask them to record a skit, a music video or even a movie using your phone or computer camera. When they’re finished, host a premiere for the whole family. And don’t forget the popcorn.

Blanket Fort

Build a Blanket Fort

When the rain rolls in, don’t panic. Pull out the blankets, towels and sheets and let their imagination run wild with blanket fort building. At the end of the day, challenge your kids to see who can clean up the fastest. Entertaining the kids and keeping the house tidy? Sounds like a win-win.
